This unbuilt scheme for “The Courtyard” project represents a parallel design exploration developed during the early stages. Although not pursued due to budget constraints and client preferences, it remains a key “spatial laboratory” case within HO Studio’s practice—an investigation into how spatial logic, efficiency, and liveability can be maximised in compact residential formats.
At the heart of the concept is a reorganisation of the ground-floor living zones for optimal circulation and functional clarity. The kitchen is positioned along the internal party wall, forming a continuous work surface. Beneath the staircase, a discreet powder room is tucked in, allowing the adjacent guest room to be reconfigured with a fully private ensuite, enhancing autonomy and usability.
On one side of the dining area, a built-in bench seat maximises spatial efficiency. Adjacent to it, the cabinetry, pantry and bar are seamlessly interlocked, consolidating multiple storage and hospitality functions. The kitchen joinery flows effortlessly into the living room media unit, creating a unified spatial rhythm. Both corners of the living space feature large sliding doors that dissolve boundaries with the outdoors, ensuring abundant daylight, natural ventilation, and visual openness.
Though unbuilt, this scheme exemplifies our studio’s approach to compact design: precise, integrated, and human-centred.
